editorial/documentary style photograph. (ignore the silly hat)

i'm on spring break this week. no specific plans just yet. i think i'm going to work on getting the house reorganzied and get some stuff up on the walls.

good weekend.

my daughter was with my mom all weekend. it was a much needed vacation from parenting. while i didn't really do anything but hang out at the house, it was nice to focus on just myself, school work and get things done around the house that really needed to get done.

the weather was so nice saturday that i spent the majority of the day outside. my friend and i went to star fort and ran their trail. it was really beautiful and quite challenging. a lot of hills and curves. my legs are a bit sore today.

i finally got around to patching my tires and replacing the tubes so i can get back on my bicycle. the tires are screwed, so i'm going to have to buy new ones soon. i'll keep them patched and taped until they wear out completely, though.

here's a couple of shots from my holga. i took these pictures a couple of weeks ago and had them developed yesterday. i want to work on more full frame prints like this.

i need a vacation.
no kid.
no computer.
just me and my camera.
my bike.
my music.

i had said in an earlier blog that i wasn't going to post any photos from my professional work, but i really liked how these two came out. photographing newborns is harder than i thought. i got a lot of good stuff, but not a lot of variety. as much as a i love working with natural light, i should have brought hot lamps or something else to light the place up better. i'll know that for next time. i had my flashes, but i didn't need that much output.

overall, it was a good shoot, but i know i could do better.

i love it when things like this happen.

while i enjoy photographing people, i really love candid/semi journalistic stuff more. i like disconnecting the subject from the content and leaving the photograph to the viewer's own interpretation.

this photo was taken saturday during a photo shoot, but wasn't part of the photo shoot.

school. summer. etc.

so i'm looking at my list of required classes for my BS in Visual Arts. i'm 5 courses away from getting my gen ed courses done and 12 core requirements left. what i'm trying to figure out is how to do my schedule to be able to finish (kind of) sooner so i can start the MAT program.

i think i'm going to take 2 summer classes. one each session. today will consist of me going by the financial aid office and trying to get money to be able to take these courses.

over the next 2 or 3 semesters, i really want to just work in the arts. i'm really enjoying those classes. i'm doing better with drawing. it's finally making sense to me, but i'm not drawing often enough to feel like i'm really awesome yet. it's good to be in a class of people that do draw really well. i see how they are drawing and it makes more sense. last semester's drawing class was a joke.

today is yet another busy day, but this time busy with "business". i have a lunch meeting with the director of the arts center, and we're supposed to discuss the photography workshops that i was going to start working on/putting together. after that, i have a newborn photo shoot.

i think i have some kind of nerve damage in my left arm. hopefully it will go away. my fingers go numb, my feet go numb and yesterday the left side of my face was twitching and my lips were numb. something's going on. the area where the "funny bone" is has a lingering numbness, so i'm guessing it has something to do with that. i tend to lean and put pressure on the area when i'm sitting at the desk.

valentines day post

"The only bubble in the flat champagne of February is Valentine’s Day. It was no accident that our ancestors pinned Valentine’s Day on February’s shirt: he or she lucky enough to have a lover in frigid, antsy February has cause for celebration, indeed." — Tom Robbins

productive day

- worked on school projects
- hung more prints around the house
- cleaned
- raked the front yard
- got new music
- made the deans list at school
- got in the "review" at school (arts and lit mag)
- made a delicious dinner for me and carley

i want to do more, but i'm shutting down. today's been pretty awesome.

my anxiety is kicking in for some reason and i'm letting my anxiety get the best of me right now and i just need to calm down.

i kind of reworked this site yesterday. it needed a different look. i want "followers"... i guess. but nothing i write is really all that interesting. i want the focus on this site to be more on the artistic side of my photography rather than the "professional" side of it. i haven't really been shooting much lately, though, but this weekend will be pretty low key with school work, which i'm excited about, so i'm going to go out and shoot with the holga some more and with my new lens for my digital.

when it rains, it floods.

2 days of steady rain, i get a lake in my front and back yard.
i believe i have a drainage problem.

random thoughts.

i'm on my 3rd cup of coffee. it's a daily ritual. rituals are good things to have. today is tuesday, so that means no class for me, but a lot of studying and working on art projects.

a part of me is getting frustrated with myself. this semester has been strange. the weeks are flying by, and i feel like i'm not learning anything. the same discipline i had last semester is different this semester. i'm so overwhelmed on my busy days that on my not-busy days, i mentally shut down.

aside from school keeping me so busy, carley is stressing me out. she doesn't understand how busy i actually am. not to mention i'm not working, so living off this loan money is not easy. i'm already starting to stress about the summer and how bills are going to get paid. if i have to get a job, i'll do it, but i don't want to. i suppose now is the time that i really start marketing myself for weddings and portraits and that kind of stuff, but i just don't have the energy for it and sometimes i feel like i'm not good enough.

my grandmother's health is declining. it has been for quite sometime. the doctors found a cyst on her lymph nodes and aren't treating that yet. she also has a blood disease that she goes to treatment for weekly. it's crazy, despite her health, she still smiles and laughs and i see joy in her eyes even though her body is shutting down.

this is such a negative entry. i'm in a weird place right now. i need to get out of town for a few days. i may run away this weekend. who knows.

on a lighter note, i have a few pictures to share. they're nothings special or fancy, just a couple of photographs i took of my friend's children. i can't wait to do a real shoot of them. they're such beautiful children.

trying to pick back up on this stuff.

as if i don't have enough going on in my life... school is keeping me really busy, trying to get on my feet full time with photography is keeping me busy, raising a teenager (obviously, busy...), being involved with the arts center (busy busy busy).

in no way am i complaining. i like that i'm doing so much. it gives me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day when i'm exhausted from working on an art project all day or from running x-number of miles. life is fun these days.

my school schedule is pretty nuts. i'm in class mondays and wednesday from 9am-8pm, pretty much... then off tuesday and thursday, and have classes until 1230 on fridays. i though it was the most brilliant schedule when i first put it together, but trying to get in the rhythm of things on my days off is sometimes hard.

the really great thing about having time off like i do is that i get to spend time with friends and do things i wouldn't normally have "time" to do when i was working. this week i spend 2 afternoons with my friend, claire. she needed some tips on how to use her camera. i love talking cameras and helping people with their equipment. claire has 3 beautiful children she's raising on her own now. i commend her for that. i have a hard enough time with just carley sometimes.

i'm currently editing some photos from this past week, but i don't have enough time to post, look for some random photos later.
