today i spent some time with my random thrift store toys and set up a still life to photograph. i'm really trying to figure out where i'm going with this concept of "plastic on plastic" toy series. sometimes my brain overloads and i get scared to write down my thoughts because every new thought leads to a bigger and bigger project that is frightening to take on... mostly because i know that each new photograph is going to blow my old photographs out of the water. it's a great feeling but i really want to bask in the glory of my current work, you know...

this weekend i had 2 photo shoots. the first was family portraits and the second was maternity photos. the family portraits were a lot of fun. the boys (ages 5 and 6) had a lot of energy and were just natural models.

the past 2 days have been spent taking pictures and working in the darkroom. working in the darkroom has been so much fun. i love being in there by myself, putting my ipod on shuffle and turning the music all the way up and just working working working.
the two above shots are of random things around my house. i made the "wreath" a couple of years ago and didn't want to throw it away so it stays on my mailbox. my garage area is such a wreck. i love dumpstering random things and holding on to them for future projects. all those objects make interesting shapes and reminds me of my pack-rat grandparent's sheds and garages.

my head is in a weird place today. i fell physically and mentally exhausted. maybe i should just take a break, but i'm overwhelmed with things to get done. i thought working in the darkroom was going to be relaxing but it turned out to be kind of stressful and a bit of a trainwreck. i played around with my newly made pinhole camera and got some neat shots with it. once i get a chance to scan them, i'll post them sometime in the next week.

i have 3 other negatives with this same kind of shot. the other 2 do not have my cat lurking in the side of the frame, though. i've been sort of inspired to do a short run of photographs with my random knickknack collection. i think it could be interesting and make for fun post cards to send to friends. i can't wait to get started on it this weekend!
this photograph, i just love. i love geometry and lines and shapes and the combination of organic lines with structured lines. this is the side of my house. i love my house and i don't think i photograph it enough. carley and i won't always live here, but we have made some great memories here. i bought this home 6 years ago. i'm so emotionally attached that i don't think i can sell it even when we do move.

i could NOT resist taking portraits of vincent the other day when he showed up to class wearing this awesome (and uncharacteristic) bright platypus shirt. granted, you can't see the brightness in the shirt, but it was bright blue with a big platypus face on the front. he and jarod were going out to shoot with a couple of mamiya cameras and it felt like an opportune time to do some quick portraits of the guys. i should have gotten a single shot of jarod as well. maybe next time.
i shot this with fuji neopan 100 ISO film. the negs are actually pretty thin and a bit of a pain to print. (yay digital lab?) i bought 4 rolls of kodak tri-x film 400 ISO and am going to give it a go this weekend. i think 400 speed film is the way to go with holga.

this is actually one of the rides at the carnival that i went to the other week. i have a lot of holga negatives that i need to scan. sunday i worked in the darkroom for roughly 3 hours developing and printing. i haven't worked in there in ages, but i fell into pattern quickly. i certainly forgot how meditative the darkroom is. the smell of the chemicals are oddly soothing and gives me a sort of comfort in the familiarity and love of the darkroom. i may just have to set up a cot in there and live there for the rest of the semester.

i can't believe that i didn't even finish one roll of film on the evening i went to the carnival. i got a little sidetracked with karaoke (or "carni-oke" as my friend and i called it) i didn't have my tripod, nor did i really come prepared to shoot the carnival. but i really enjoy this image. the double exposure was on purpose. i wish i had of done different angles in one frame.

the other week i was hired to do a fashion shoot for the local magazine. the first half of the shoot was a bit stagnant and "commercial/catalog", but i really enjoyed shooting the 2nd half. My goal was to create this sort of bar environment, very casual and it turned out quite nice. i think the magazine comes out today, so i can't wait to see it on paper.

i'm a spontaneous person that seems to react immediately from my environment and shoot, rather than thinking and over thinking other photographic i. friday night, my friends and i were in the local museum, so i decided to pose them real quick in this museum version of an old train station. they're so used to me with my camera in their faces all the time that posing for me is natural and now seldom awkward.
